LeBron James has spoken out in support of his new teammate Jaylen Brown, calling him “misunderstood” ahead of their first season together with the Philadelphia 76ers. In the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast, James shared his thoughts on Brown’s unique personality and playing style.
LeBron James Defends Jaylen Brown’s Unique Personality
During the Mind the Game podcast, James explained that Brown’s individuality can make people uncomfortable. “I just think anytime someone kind of moves to their own beat, it makes people uncomfortable,” James said. “He has his own voice. He moves to the sound of his own beat. It makes people uncomfortable because it’s not what everyone’s accustomed to. When it becomes misunderstood, then it becomes intimidating, and people look at it as ‘I don’t wanna be around that,’ because they feel intimidated by it.”
James revealed that they have worked out three or four times this offseason and maintained communication. He expressed uncertainty about his initial impression but looks forward to spending more time with Brown. James also praised Brown’s approach to the game, both offensively and defensively, and acknowledged his individuality.

The 76ers’ Offseason Moves
The 76ers made headlines by acquiring Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft picks. Shortly thereafter, Philly signed James in free agency, shocking the basketball world.
James discussed how the Brown trade influenced his decision to join the 76ers, stating, “The JB trade too, that was another piece that I don’t think anybody seen coming. I think people saw that something was going to happen there, but I don’t think anybody thought it would be Philly that would be part of that trade package.” He praised Brown’s insights and individuality, saying, “I love the way [Brown] approaches the game too, on both sides of the floor.
What he brings to the game, his insight on the game. … Kind of misunderstood, and that is absolutely okay. I think we’re all individuals for a reason. Everyone’s always trying to put everybody in the same box, and I love what he stands for and what he brings to the table in that fashion.”

Brown’s Career and Impact on the 76ers
Brown, a five-time All-Star, was instrumental in the Celtics’ 2024 NBA championship run, earning Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVP honors. He’s coming off a career-best season, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.
As Brown joins the 76ers, his statistics may adjust, but his impact could be significant. James also mentioned the presence of Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid as key factors in his decision to sign with Philadelphia.
After a four-game preseason slate, James and Brown will make their regular-season debut on October 20, as the 76ers face the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks.
