Casey Jarvis has taken the early lead at the Genesis Championship, the final event of the DP World Tour’s regular season. His strong performance puts him in position to overtake Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed in the Race to Dubai rankings.
The 23-year-old South African golfer birdied the final hole at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club, regaining the outright lead from Sanghun Shin. This impressive start comes as Jarvis aims to secure a top spot in the DP World Tour Play-Offs, a goal he expressed feeling “really good” about achieving.
A Breakout Year for Jarvis
Jarvis, already a two-time winner this season, is projected to move into second place in the Race to Dubai, behind leader Eugenio Chacarra. His recent form includes a tied second finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, signaling a return to the momentum he built earlier in the year. Notably, Jarvis attributed his success to improved putting, an area he’s been diligently working on, stating, “I definitely think the putting has improved a lot.”
In February, Jarvis claimed his maiden DP World Tour title at the Magical Kenya Open with a birdie-eagle finish, followed by a win on home soil at the Investec South African Open Championship. These victories secured his qualification for the 2026 Masters Tournament and The Open Championship, where he finished tied sixth. He also nearly achieved three consecutive wins with a tie for second at the Joburg Open.
A Competitive Field in South Korea
The Genesis Championship, held in South Korea, features a competitive field. Jarvis’s closest challenger, Sanghun Shin, is the Korean Tour (KPGA) Order of Merit leader. Other notable players include Frederic Lacroix, who briefly joined Jarvis at the top, and early leaders Antoine Rozner and Mikael Lindberg.
Jarvis’s performance on day one included three consecutive birdies on holes three to five, followed by another at the eighth. A dropped shot at the ninth saw him turn in 33, but after two pars, a brilliant approach from the rough at the 12th helped him regain a share of the lead. Close behind, Frederic Lacroix briefly joined Jarvis at the top after a birdie at the sixth, his 15th, but quickly dropped back after missing the green at the seventh, finishing with an opening 67. After Shin signed for a 66, Jarvis secured the outright lead with a closing birdie from seven feet.
