Ian Poulter, a key figure in LIV Golf since its 2022 launch, has announced he will not continue with the circuit’s proposed relaunch, joining a growing list of players distancing themselves from the Saudi-backed league. His decision comes as LIV Golf faces financial restructuring after filing for bankruptcy protection in September and securing new investment to continue operations in 2027. Players are now deciding whether to re-sign under revised terms, with many opting to leave.
Poulter, who co-captained the Majesticks GC team for four seasons, cited personal priorities in his departure. In a statement, he said the choice was difficult but aligned with his desire to spend more time with family, reduce travel, and focus on senior golf and other interests. The announcement follows similar moves by Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, who also exited LIV Golf over contract terms. Only a small group of players have publicly committed to re-signing ahead of the October 25 deadline, though BC Partners Credit, the new investor, may extend or waive it.
The financial instability of LIV Golf has deepened since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew funding earlier this year. The circuit’s bankruptcy filing in September was framed as a restructuring effort, but uncertainty remains about its future. Legal counsel for LIV Golf indicated last week that a decision on whether to cease operations or proceed would be made by month’s end. Poulter’s exit reflects broader unease among players about the league’s direction, with even Louis Oosthuizen, a former Open Championship winner, calling his own departure the hardest decision of his career.

Beyond golf, Poulter plans to expand his YouTube channel, The Postman, and dedicate more time to supporting his sons, Luke and Joshua, as they pursue golf careers. His shift away from competitive touring marks a change after decades of global travel.
On his own future plans, Poulter added: “I’m genuinely excited about this next chapter.”
“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family, continuing to develop The Postman YouTube channel, sharing more of my life, golf, experiences and competing in some senior events.”
“Something I am also particularly looking forward to is being able to spend more time helping [eldest son], Luke as he pursues his career in professional golf, and [youngest son] Joshua as he looks to develop as a golfer in his teenage years.”

“Having spent so many years traveling the world chasing my own golfing dreams, the opportunity to now spend more time supporting my boys as they chase theirs is something that means a great deal to me.”
“After all these years, golf has given me so much, and I’m excited about what lies ahead, both on and off the course. Thanks again to everyone who has been part of the journey so far! We certainly aren’t done yet!”
